What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is defined as a partly-fixed lateral curvature of the spine. Its origins may lie in an injury, hereditary disease or other identifiable causes, however over 80% of scoliosis cases are said to be idiopathic or unknown. This does not mean that there is no cause for 80% of scoliosis cases, just that doctors do not know how to find the cause. Although a significant volume of medical research into aetiology has been conducted, no conclusive evidence as to one single cause has been documented. Most mainstream scoliosis treatments therefore approach and treat scoliosis symptomatically.
Some marker symptoms and signs of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis include shoulder hight asymmetry, waist line asymmetry or tilt, torso/pelvis shift and limb length inequality. The same postural symptoms can be observed in almost all scoliosis cases. The developed postural symptoms themselves together with gravity effects then contribute to further degradation of postural integrity and a accelerated progression of the scoliosis condition. A lateral curvature of the spine causes compensatory curves which may be much smaller and can remain undiagnosed by the mainstream medical professional. These cannot be ignored when planning physiotherapy.
A functional three-curve scoliosis can be diagnosed in most scoliotic people. The ribs tend to rotate anteriorly on the concave side of the curve and posteriorly on the convex side. This is most visible when the patient bends down and a costal depression (a valley in the rib structure) can be observed on the concave side and a thoracic gibbus (a hump) on the convex side. The shoulder hight difference can be observable in a vast majority of scoliosis patients. The hight difference results from the shoulder girdle being drawn posteriorly above the rib valley and anteriorly above the hump. Scoliosis is a complex disease and if left untreated can influence a decreasing spinal mobility, back pain, psychological problems linked to the interpretation of one’s physical appearance and cardio-respiratory dysfunction.
